The Hindu Bureau    05 April 2023

According to Health Minister Mrs. Veena George, the state government will make appropriate and comprehensive changes to the Kerala Healthcare Service Persons and Healthcare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2012, to stop violence against hospitals and medical professionals.

She stated that the government will only move forward with this after receiving full confidence from all hospital staff. At a preliminary meeting to discuss the revision to the 2012 Act, she spoke to the representatives of several professional associations of doctors and healthcare professionals. The organizations that attended the conference expressed gratitude to the government for its proactive efforts to reduce violence in hospitals.

She noted that the decision to limit the number of people following a patient into the casualty or emergency room had been made considerably earlier and should be strictly carried out. It had been decided at an earlier meeting convened by the Chief Minister and attended by the Director General of Police that any security personnel newly hired in hospitals should be former servicemen and that closed-circuit television cameras should be installed in all key locations inside the hospital.

Mrs. George stressed the significance of preventing any potential conflict or altercation between patients, guests, and hospital employees. A location should be set aside next to every ICU in hospitals so that medical staff can inform loved ones of a patients condition.
